We are proud to announce that Kerry Dunn, Philadelphia based realist portrait artist, will be giving a 3 day portrait painting workshop in Montreal, Quebec in Fall 2015. Kerry Studied under Nelson Shanks and has been teaching at studio Incamminati since 2007. He won best of show for his self portrait “Toto and I” at the American Portrait Society international portrait competition.
Alla Prima is a wet-into-wet painting technique where the painting is finished in one sitting and has become a very popular method over the last 100 years.
Class will begin each morning with a 2 hour demo
Day 1: Students will focus on proportion and blocking in flesh tones along with a few colour accents to develop a value range, the planes of the head and some basic anatomy of features.
Day 2: We switch gears and do two colour study paintings following the colour theory of Henry Hensche. As long as proportions and values are under control, then colour can be pushed as far as possible even when getting into smaller planes and facial features. This is a great way to get students to push colour outside of their comfort zones.
Day 3: Students will practice combining both approaches into one cohesive method by starting with a grisaille and flesh tones, and then adding colour and developing their portrait as far as possible in the Alla Prima method. We will also cover anatomy, edges, working from larger to smaller, modelling form and developing features and focal points. Students will leave with 4 paintings; one flesh tone, two colour studies, and one finished Alla Prima portrait.
This workshop is for beginners to advanced painters.
